Roof replacements are a major investment, and, as with any home improvement project, there are always factors that can delay the timeline or add unforeseen expenses. Roofing isn’t any exception, so it’s best to plan ahead.
Unfortunately, many roof replacements come out of necessity. If a tree falls through your roof, you can’t wait for the ideal time to fix it; you need it now! But, since most reputable roofers in the area are booked months in advance, you’re likely to end up with a poorer quality of work if you need to have your roof replaced in an emergency situation. It’s a much better idea to be proactive and get your roof replaced before you start having issues that could lead to leaks and worse.
If you’re planning ahead, and have the luxury to wait, here are some tips about when to schedule your roof replacement.
Fall:
Fall is a great time of year to replace your roof. The weather is comfortable and consistent, which is perfect for both workers and the shingles to set and seal effectively. We have particularly nice weather in September around here, and that always helps you keep to the project timeline.
It’s also a time when we’re turning our thoughts to back-to-school and pumpkin spice, so you’re less likely to have to interrupt backyard BBQ plans for the roofing contractors. If you want to replace your roof in the fall, however, you’ll need to plan ahead and get your quote in early summer.
Summer:
Summer is when most people get their roofs replaced, because they think it makes the most sense to take advantage of the (usually) better weather. Ther reality is, though, that roofing companies around here work in all weathers. It’s entirely up to what is most convenient for you. Think about your summer plans; are you going to go on a lot of camping trips? Hosting family to outdoor parties? You’ll want to be careful how you schedule your roof replacement.
In many parts of the country, the hot summer weather can make this season a bit unpredictable when it comes to roofing jobs. The extreme heat can interfere with the shingles setting properly. However, that’s not really an issue with the (usually) mild summers of the Pacific Northwest. But, if you want to schedule your replacement for the summer months, make sure you’re booking the job in early winter!
Winter:
You might think the winter is not a great time for outdoor home improvement jobs, but it’s actually not a bad time to replace your roof. PNW roofers aren’t scared of a little rain – if they were, they’d never get any work done!
Although the weather might be slightly less than ideal, winter is a great time to replace your roof because it won’t interfere with any outdoor plans. And while a good roofer will make sure to keep your landscaping protected, it can be easier with the foliage off nearby trees and bushes. Make sure you think about the holidays, though – if you want your home picture perfect to host the family for Christmas, make sure you book the job in late summer or early fall.
Spring:
Spring is also a good time to schedule a roof replacement – just in time to have the house looking great for outdoor entertaining in summer. As with the rest of the year, it’s still a good idea to start gathering quotes about two to three months in advance. Plan on getting quotes in early to mid winter.
Schedule Your Roof Replacement Today
When it comes down to it, the best time to schedule your roof replacement is as soon as you know you need one – but before it’s become an emergency. Stay on top of roof maintenance and get regular inspections. The longer you wait to replace that old roof, the more chance you’ll have of a failure – and the less likely you’ll be able to book a reputable roofer when you need it.
